My Son's and My Autism Story

I have a miracle story to tell all of you.  You all know I have a son on the autism spectrum.  He was my miracle child because I almost lost him 3 times (2 times during pregnancy and 1 time at birth).  I have a family history of neurological disorders (epilepsy). Then he was diagnosed 1 month before he was 2.  I didn't even know what autism was at the time because I was a single mom.  We noticed some signs that things were not right along with the daycare workers noticing.  A child that once had a great vocabulary started becoming non-verbal.  He would sit off by himself to play instead of playing with everyone else.  He would is head on cement walls and floors to express his anger or had a hard time expressing what he was feeling.  He was so delayed in his gross and fine motor skills.  He started with Early Intervention and received OT, PT, Speech, PEC System, you name it.  I put my heart and sole into making life easier for him to cope with.  I refused to set routines knowing that I could never keep a routine for myself. I never set schedules because I never had the same schedule for work. I made sure to work on what the instructors worked with my son on that day.  Yes I had my moments of crying, feeling the fear that he will not move on to the next step, or that I am failing him. I felt overwhelmed, stressed out, and helpless.  But I moved on and worked harder with him. Its been almost 10 years since his diagnosis.  He has tested out of OT, PT, and Speech. He has a vibrant vocabulary.  He still has an aide and receives counseling.  Aggressive behaviors are the thing of the past (he use to throw desk, books, and chairs.  He also hit, kick, and bite).  The head banging ceased at the age of 4.  He still have obsessions which I am working on to decrease or stop completely.  I feel that obsessions will just get you into a lot of trouble when you get older (my opinion). I looked over his autism and treated him as I would if he didn't have it.  He is now a 6th grade student with a 93 average.  He reads at 8th grade level and has a photographic memory.  He tries to make friends and tries to carry conversations (2 way conversations instead of 1 way).  He loves to build with legos and read books. He plays the violin and tells me his dreams of going to college, becoming an astronaut, and live in a mansion in Texas.  I have people telling me that they cannot tell that he has autism.  It was a lot of hard work, dedication, and some 4-5 hour sleep nights ( I was working part time and going to college full time).  Because of all the hard work I put in my son I wanted to continue it in the school setting.  I am currently working as a 1:1 aide and have been doing this for 4 years.  I hope in the future to go back to school to get my education degree.  I just wanted to share this with all of you about my life story.  I would like my son's story to be a motivator and people to know that this can be done.  I am not saying that any of you don't work hard with your child at all.  I just saying that some miracles can happen.

Book Review #1 "House Rules" by Jodi Picoult

This year I promised myself to read at least a half hour per day.  So far I have kept with this promised :)

I have just finished reading "House Rules" by Jodi Picoult. This novel was wonderful from beginning to end.  It is about a child with Asperger's Syndrome, his brother Theo, and his mother Emma.  Throughout the book they each tell their story and from other characters that I will not name.  They talk about how their lives are especially with a child with autism.  You will be amazed throughout this whole novel.  There are many surprises especially at the end.  I did learn a lot of tidbits throughout this book.  There were also some commical moments, sad moments, and happy moments.  I highly recommend this book and I promise you will not want to put it down.

Beautiful Snow In Western New York

Today was a gorgeous day filled with snow.  It has been snowing off and on all day along with cold temperatures. I am not the type to complain because the snow is very beautiful to me.  Looking out my front window reminds me of a beautiful portrait that can be painted by a famous artist.

Then I walk around looking out all my windows I feel like I am in a winter wonderland.

It is so amazing how the snow can bring out a lot of beauty in just a small area.  Yes, people will complain about having to shovel or how cold it is outside but I enjoy both.  Shoveling gives you great exercise especially for your adominal area.  Unfortunately, I am unable to shovel right now due to me being in a walking cast but I do have my wonderful husband and boys that will do it.  I love the cold weather because its an excuse to drink a lot of hot cocoa and sit in my snuggy.  It also gives me the excuse to craft a lot more and enjoy valuable family time.  What do you love about the winter?

Ready, Set, Go...................

Happy New Year!!!

Happy New Year to everyone.  This year is a year a wonderful and great changes.  I have made one resolution for myself this year.  Some people would choose to loose weight, get organized, and other things that are very common for resolutions.  I am choosing to keep negativity that I can choose to keep out of my life and only bringing in the positive.  I feel if we can keep the negative out and keep the positive in then everything else will fall into place.  I would love to read more than I have been.  I tried to make time last year but I put games in front of it.  So I will make time for it everyday especially having reading time with my boys.  I do have a very high goal for this year also.  I would love to go back to school to get my education degree with online schooling.  Every year I have put it off but I would really love to put my best foot forward and push to get it done.

For Jodi's Craft Emporium, I will be setting goals for each month to keep focused.  My goals for January is:

1) Make 10 samples per day:  I belong to two sample boxes per month to help with promotion of my shop.
2) List an item everyday
3) Promote everyday
4) Blog everyday
5) Run a give-away through my facebook page for Jodi's Craft Emporium
6) Create Team and Non-Team Treasuries a day:  This is what I do to help other shops and promote them through Etsy.
7) 650 Sales
8) 900 Admirers
9) 420 Circles
10) 500 fans on facebook

These maybe high goals but I will work hard to achieve them.  The past two years I have slacked on my shop due to the passing of my dad and grandma in 2010 and still getting over the shock of what happened in 2010 last year.  Now its head in gear time to get my shop back to the way it use to be.

I hope everyone is enjoying their first day of the new year and sending wonderful wishes for the new year to all of you.
